Can heart period influence respiration?

      Background: Some studies suggest that heart period can modulate subsequent respiratory period (termed cardioventilatory coupling). If true, then changes in heart rate variability should alter the variability of respiratory periods. Therefore, we hypothesized that increases in heart rate variability, induced by vagotonic atropine administration, augments respiratory variability.
