The oxygen sensitivity of sympathetic premotor neurons is mediated by non-neuronal release of atp, not heme oxygenase-2 (ho-2)

Sympathetic premotor neurons in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) are intrinsically sensitive to hypoxia and are responsible for the sympathoexcitation evoked by acute cerebral ischaemia. Here we consider two mediators of hypoxia sensitivity in this population: the oxygen-sensing molecule HO-2, and non-neuronal ATP release.
