Syncope is a very common clinical problem that will affect almost 1 in 5 people at
some point in their life. The most common cause of syncope is vasovagal syncope (a
reflex faint) that probably accounts for over 50% of all syncope. Autonomic reflexes
gone astray are thought to play a critical role in the mechanisms of vasovagal syncope.
While non-lethal, vasovagal syncope has been a difficult disorder to understand and
to manage in the clinic. The management of syncope can be quite challenging, often
resulting in expensive and unfruitful investigations. The Heart Rhythm Society released
an Expert Consensus Statement on the Diagnosis and Treatment of 1 Postural Tachycardia
Syndrome, Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia, and Vasovagal Syncope in May 2015. Dr.
Robert Sheldon chaired this statement. He will review contemporary evidenced-based
management recommendations for vasovagal syncope.
